As Young Expert you will be part of the PCA GIRE team at the DNH and will execute specific tasks related to groundwater and water quantity issues. You will find links between existing and future projects related to ground water especially between the DNH and PCA-GIRE/BAM-GIRE project (Wetlands International), but also with the national water mapping of the DNH (executed by Akvo).
Your tasks are not only related to the PCA GIRE but also to the Water Resources Management department at the DNH, you will therefore work closely with this department. This includes working with the SIGMA team of the DNH, and in collaboration with the Akvo team that gives technical assistance to this team, as part of the national water point mapping programme to update and improve the SIGMA database.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
-Your initial task will be to write a clear report on the current surface and ground water measuring points for water levels, to give a picture of the current monitoring network.
-You will review and rewrite the current monitoring strategy from 2004, together with the Dutch Yep-per who is already working on the water quality monitoring network.
-You will develop basic water balances per sub-basin taking into account the different water users in the area.
-You will work on hydraulic modelling of sub-basins of the Niger.
-You will do water quantity monitoring activities.
-You will support preparation of the mapping the Northern regions – you will support the creation of "listings” (documentation for enumerators with full lists of all water points as registrated in the SIGMA database)
-You will support training and support to the database managers of the regional branches of the DNH (DRH) before, during and after data collection and will assist in certain training activities with enumerators, followed by data cleaning support.
-If time allows you to, you will support the water quality testing of the national mapping, by giving support to the actors on the use of Akvo Caddisfly.
Requirements and competencies:
-Bachelor degree (BSc/BA) or Masters degree (MSc/MBA/MA) in (geo)hydrology or related subject.
-Have knowledge of hydraulic modelling and databases.
-Have very good knowledge of computer (Microsoft Office, specifically Excel), and smartphone skills.
-Natural interest in Water Management related issues and be socially engaged.
-Good understanding of the various aspect of data management that is involved in ground and surface water monitoring, data collection, data validation, database design, use of data from database and how to present results and make decent analysis.
-Interest in how Good Water Governance is implemented based on knowledge based decision-making (so how to present data for decision makers to develop policies).
-Strong motivation for participating in the Young Expert Programme, as well as working for the DNH and Akvo.
-Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
-Excellent interpersonal and communications skills: Pro-active, open and curious attitude, and willing to learn.
-Ability to work independently, take initiative and work in a results-driven way.
Able to identify your personal learning needs within the YEP program (www.yepprogrammes.com) and what you are going to obtain.
-A real team player within DNH, PCA GIRE and Akvo.
-Excellent written and spoken English and French.
-Be willing to travel and work in the regions if security allows to do so.
